Fee Increases Due to PA 96-34



Frequently Asked Questions

Due to Public Act 96-34, approved by the General Assembly and signed into law by the Governor, the following title and registration fee increases take effect January 1, 2010. Registrations that expire in January 2010 or later are affected by the increase.

Passenger Vehicles: $79 $99
Ceremonial Vehicles: $79 $99
Flat-weight Vehicles carrying 8,000 pounds or less (B class): $79 $99

Motorcycles, motor-driven cycles, pedalcycles and recreational vehicles are exempt from the fee increase, except for recreational vehicles displaying specialty plates, which are subject to the new $99 fee of $99 plus any applicable specialty plate fees.

Duplicate/Corrected Certificate of Title: $65 $95

Agriculture or personal use all-terrain vehicles, off-highway motorcycles, and salvage and junk vehicles are exempt from the title fee increase.

Renewal fee extensions are based on the current expiration date. If the current expiration is December 2009 or earlier, the extension fee is $6.50 per month. If the current expiration is January 2010 or later, the extension fee is $8 per month.

Title transactions are based on the date the Secretary of State’s office receives the correctly completed application (stamped date on the application). The office must receive the correctly completed application before January 1, 2010, or the new title fee applies.

Possible scenarios in which registration renewal and title transactions can occur:

Applications received prior to January 1, 2010:

1. Applicant purchases a vehicle on December 15, 2009, and the Secretary of State’s office receives the title and registration paperwork on or before December 31, 2009.

Registration Fee: $ 79
Title Fee: $ 65
Total Due: $144

2. Applicant purchases a vehicle on December 15, 2009, and the Secretary of State’s office receives the title and transfer paperwork on or before December 31, 2009.

Transfer Fee: $15
Title Fee: $65
Total Due: $80

Applications received after January 1, 2010.

1. Applicant purchases a vehicle on December 15, 2009, and the Secretary of State’s office receives the title and registration paperwork on or after January 1, 2010.

Registration Fee: $ 79*
Title Fee: $ 95
Total Due: $174

* Expiration date of registration sticker remains December 31, 2010.

2. Applicant purchases a vehicle on December 15, 2009, and the Secretary of State’s office receives title and transfer paperwork on or after January 1, 2010.

Transfer Fee: $ 25
Title Fee: $ 95
Total Due: $120

3. Applicant purchases a vehicle on January 15, 2010.

Registration Fee: $ 99
Title Fee: $ 95
Total Due: $194

4. Applicant purchases a vehicle on January 15, 2010.

Transfer Fee: $ 25
Title Fee: $ 95
Total Due: $120

Applicant is renewing their vanity i.e., Firefighters Memorial license plates with expiration of January 2010:

Annual Fee: $109
Title Fee: $ 20
Total Due: $129
($99 registration fee + $17 Firefighters Memorial license plates fee + $13 vanity fee)
