The Department of Physical Services is responsible for the property management of the 22 buildings that comprise the Capitol Complex in Springfield and three buildings in Chicago.
As the custodian of the Capitol Complex and the Secretary of State’s facilities in Chicago, snow removal and maintenance are performed on more than 100 miles of sidewalks and parking lots.
Other duties include preventive and routine maintenance of all Capitol Complex buildings. The department also provides warehousing for office supplies and custodian and trades' materials. Other responsibilities include processing more than 24 million pieces of mail annually.
The department supports many special events and civic actives in Springfield, including the Illinois State Fair, the Chicago Auto Show, and the annual Secretary of State’s Antique Auto Show and Sports Car Meet.
Tours of the Capitol Building are given daily from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., except on Easter, Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year’s Day. The Capitol Visitors’ Center, adjacent to the Capitol at 425 South College Street, provides parking for autos and buses, as well as information and video presentation. More that 180,000 people visit the Capitol annually.
